Udio

Udio is an AI-powered music generation platform that transforms text descriptions into complete, original songs. Launched in April 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers, it lets users generate both vocal and instrumental compositions without musical expertise.

Overview

Founded by David Ding and his team of AI researchers, Udio represents a breakthrough in generative music technology. The platform has gained significant attention for its ability to create viral content, including the famous "BBL Drizzy" parody that garnered millions of views across social media platforms.

Important: downloads are currently disabled

On 29 October 2025 Udio entered into a partnership with Universal Music Group, settling UMG's copyright litigation; a separate partnership with Warner Music Group followed. As part of the UMG agreement, Udio states that downloading of audio, video and stems has been disabled. Users can still generate and listen to music on the platform, but they cannot export it.

Udio softened the change with a one-time grant of 1,000 non-expiring credits to all subscribers, and raised subscription credit limits: the Standard plan went from 1,200 to 2,400 credits per month, and Pro from 4,800 to 6,000. Pro subscribers can also create five sets of songs (ten songs) simultaneously, up from four. Udio has said it is rebuilding as a fully licensed platform.

Anyone evaluating Udio should treat the download restriction as the defining constraint of the product today.

Key Features

• Two Song Lengths: Every generation produces two songs, either 32 seconds each or ~130 seconds each (the "u-130" model, roughly two minutes). Longer tracks are built by extending.
• Remix, Extend, Edit and Inpaint: Regenerate or surgically edit part of an existing track. Trimming a song costs no credits.
• Styles: Upload an audio clip, or pick a track from your library, and Udio generates a new song based on its vibe. Launched 31 March 2025, early access for Pro subscribers.
• Voices: Launched 11 September 2025, in early access for all subscribers.

• Capped at three 130-second ("u-130") songs per day regardless of credit balance
• Credits do not roll over; the daily and monthly limits reset

Standard subscription

• Up to 2,400 credits per month (raised from 1,200 after the UMG partnership)
• A one-time grant of 1,000 non-expiring credits was issued to existing subscribers
• A one-time, 7-day free trial of Standard is available to each creator; trials keep free-tier credit limits and the 3-per-day u-130 cap

Pro subscription

• Up to 6,000 credits per month (raised from 4,800)
• Create five sets of songs (ten songs) at the same time
• Styles feature (early access)

Credits do not roll over month to month, and if a subscription lapses the account reverts to free-account credit limits. Top-up credits bought à la carte never expire but need an active subscription to spend.
