Anthropic has hired former OpenAI engineer Clive Chan to develop its own AI chips. Until now, the company did not have a dedicated hardware division.

Work Experience

At OpenAI, Chan was involved in designing custom silicon and participated in a partnership with Broadcom. Prior to joining OpenAI, he developed chips for training ML models on the Tesla Autopilot team, where he was responsible for data center architecture and energy-efficient computing.

Anthropic's Goals

Chan's hiring is expected to help Anthropic build a full-fledged team of hardware engineers. The company's transition to its own hardware is planned to achieve two key goals:

  • Reducing the cost of computing
  • Increasing business margins
