# OpenAI Hardware Engineer Moves to Anthropic

> Anthropic has hired former OpenAI engineer Clive Chan to develop its own AI chips in order to reduce computing costs.

Anthropic has hired former OpenAI engineer Clive Chan to develop its own AI chips. Until now, the company did not have a dedicated hardware division.

## Work Experience

At OpenAI, Chan was involved in designing custom silicon and participated in a partnership with Broadcom. Prior to joining OpenAI, he developed chips for training ML models on the Tesla Autopilot team, where he was responsible for data center architecture and energy-efficient computing.

## Anthropic's Goals

Chan's hiring is expected to help Anthropic build a full-fledged team of hardware engineers. The company's transition to its own hardware is planned to achieve two key goals:
- Reducing the cost of computing
- Increasing business margins
